Most people, on some level, like orgies. That doesn’t mean you’d go yourself, it just means that if a friend went, you’d probably want to hear about it. And why? Because sex is interesting, and sex taken to any kind of extreme conclusion is very interesting. So that makes you think that maybe, maybe, orgies are alright.

What few people realise is that alright orgies don’t happen by themselves. Someone has to do a bunch of work to achieve the desired intersection between sleaze and hygiene. So to find out how professional orgies are coordinated, and what makes a good one, we spoke to a guy named Pete, who was laying sex toys across a coffee table.

VICE: Hi Pete, why are you doing that?
Pete: Well it’s an apartment in Sydney, and I need to get it ready. We hire all sorts of venues—it could be an art gallery, a church, an old hall or a hotel. We meet generally on a monthly basis.

So what does get it ready mean?
Okay, for starters I bring bags of laser lights, condoms, adult toys, lube, sheets, and towels. I then move the furniture out of the way so it’s play friendly. I put on DVDs and put out soap, then unpack the groceries so we’ve got a good spread including hot nibbles. I always like putting out lots of lollies too. People like lollies because they’re a kids’ tradition and a sugar hit. Also dips, crackers, cheese, soft drinks and mineral water. We’re drug free though, and we don’t provide alcohol. People can bring their own, but we don’t want to encourage drinking because drunk people break bottles, and get pushy or rude. I then put out all the sex toys and condoms, and that’s what I’m doing here.

How many condoms do you use in a night?
I’ve never counted, although sometimes we put them all on a plate to see how much fun we’ve had. And there’s probably fifty to sixty.

Wait, so that’s a photo of used condoms?
Yes well, we’ve got to clean them up, so I put them on a plate to see them all.

And what sort of music do you play?
Never house music because the beat is too invasive. Just good classic pop like Michelle Branch and her song “The Game of Love.” It’s a great, upbeat song and I think she’d be flattered. “She Bangs” by Ricky Martin is also another good one.

And what’s the schedule tonight?
People will arrive clothed about 8:30, and a few of them might recognise each other from other parties, although we basically don’t talk from party to party. We start by showing show erotic films while people have a chat and a nibble. Hopefully then everyone has arrived by the top of the hour, because we do have a locked door policy. I’ll then do a little briefing, just to discuss the logistics of the night—where people can play and can’t, balconies where they have to be clothed, where there are smoking areas and toilets. Then I run through our wristband system. For example a red one means you’re just a voyeur, and you’re just there to watch. Black is for straight play, and pink is for same-sex only play, blue is for both same-sex and straight. Everyone is given a bag upon entry so the clothes all go into the bags. Finally, play begins from about 9:10pm, and that usually starts with touching someone gently, then moving to oral, and then finally, screwing.

How did you get into this?
I’d always been into nude beaches but I wanted to take it to the next step. So I started going to a few parties, and they were extreme, but the frustration for me was that there was only bi-sexuality accepted on the female part, and not for the males. So I decided to start my own parties. I organise the venue, then advertise it on our website (orgyorgyorgy.com) so that people can send me invite requests. People send in photos, because it is a physical party and we want people well presented, toned, and people you’d want to get off with. We then send out the invitations to the selected list.

And how many do you usually have?
It always depends on who can get a baby-sitter, and who can’t, and also what city we’re in. I’d say usually over twenty-five. There’s always a mixture of guys and girls but the ratios don’t really matter because we’re bisexual.

Is there a pattern to your clientele?
It’s anyone from a labourer to a doctor to a celebrity. We sometimes have sports-related celebrities, but only when we have a masked theme. Usually people are from eighteen to their late fourties. We find that people in their twenties are generally shyer than people in their thirties and fourties.

What’s something surprising you’ve seen?
Well, a nice story is that we’ve actually had two couples meet at a party and get married. But I always get a buzz when a straight couple arrive, and take the opportunity to become very liberal. For example, we had one couple arrive and the woman’s fantasy was to watch her man screw another man while she used a strap-on. We had a great venue that night, with a view over Sydney and everyone got to fulfil their fantasies.

Why are you attracted to this?
I think it really comes down to sex drive. Some people are just highly driven by sex and it’s these people, looking for something new and edgy. Then there are other people just have a bucket list and say, yeah I’d like to try that.

What about your own private life? Do you have a partner?
I’m pretty happy to keep things location based. I’m getting a little bit older and set in my ways, so I’d have to find a partner who would accept this side of me. Some people ask me what will happen when I’m a lonely old man, but I just enjoy life to the fullest. Week to week, year to year. That’s how I like to live.

Will you do this forever?
No, I guess the physicality of setting up will become an issue, and also no one wants to see a creepy seventy year-old man setting up a sex party. So I don’t know, it probably won’t go on forever.
