Paul Ryan Has Finally Sold His Soul to Donald Trump

Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan finally came around to the inevitability of Donald Trump Thursday, announcing in an op-ed for his hometown newspaper that he will be voting for his party's presidential nominee.

For weeks, Ryan had been holding out on backing Trump, telling CNN last month that he was not ready to endorse and was waiting to find out more about what the real estate tycoon would be willing to do to support the GOP's policy agenda.

Today, the Wisconsin congressman apparently changed his tune, writing in the Janesville Gazette that he and Trump "have more common ground than disagreement."

"I feel confident he would help us turn the ideas in this agenda into laws to help improve people's lives," Ryan continued, explaining that after meeting Trump and discussing specific policies, he believes that having a Republican president—any Republican president—who can sign the party's bills into law will be best for everyone.

It wasn't the ringing endorsement that most presidential candidates hope for from their party's leaders. But Ryan's support is nevertheless a big get for Trump, who has been struggling to line up endorsements from congressional Republicans understandably worried about what their party's turgid nominee will do to their own reelection chances this fall.
