Aldon Smith Arrested Again

San Francisco 49ers outside linebacker/defensive end Aldon Smith was arrested Thursday night in Santa Clara, Calif., by local police on charges of hit and run, DUI and vandalism. Bail was set at $26,000.

Smith, 25, is serving the first year of a three-year probation that resulted from his arrest last year on possession of an assault weapon and two misdemeanor counts of DUI. One of the conditions of his probation was that he could not drink alcohol or even step foot inside a liquor store. Therefore, a conviction on charges stemming from his arrest on Thursday night would be a violation of his probation and could result in a much heavier sentence than the $2,000 fine, 235 hours of community service and the three-year probation he received last year.

These types of incidents are becoming a sadly recurring theme in Smith's life.

*In January 2012, Smith was arrested on suspicion of DUI while driving in Miami Beach, Fla.

*In June 2012, an incident reportedly took place at Smith and former teammate Delanie Walker's party at Smith's house in San Jose, Calif., after several gang members showed up. To clear out the party, Smith and Walker reportedly fired a gun in the air from Smith's balcony. Smith was later charged with illegal possession of an assault weapon.

*In September 2013, Smith received another DUI after he drove his car into a tree at 7:00 a.m. and was found passed out in the car with his foot on the accelerator. Though it occurred during the season, Smith voluntarily went into rehab and spent a few weeks away from the team.

*In April 2014, Smith was detained at the Los Angeles International Airport after a confrontation with a TSA agent in which Smith mentioned the word, "bomb."

Smith was later suspended by the NFL for the first 9 games of the 2014 season, although it was unclear exactly why he had been suspended.

At this point, it seems unlikely that Smith, who has recorded 44 sacks in 50 career games in four seasons in San Francisco, will play another game for the Niners.

Smith, if he is released as expected, would be the latest player to leave San Francisco in what has been a tumultuous offseason. The team has already lost 2014 starters Patrick Willis, Chris Borland, Justin Smith, and Anthony Davis to retirement, while Mike Iupati, Frank Gore, Michael Crabtree, and Chris Culliver have joined other teams.
