Australia's greatest cricket ground looks set to host the football's 'Superclásico de las Americas' next June.

The Victorian state government is understood to be on the cusp of announcing that football giants Brazil and Argentina will play at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), according to News Corp Australia.

This means the likes of Lionel Messi and Neymar will boot around the soccer ball where the likes of Sir Don Bradman, Dennis Lillee and Steve Waugh have got stuck in with the leather and willow.

It is hoped that one of the two South American sides will then play Australia, as the Socceroos warm up for the 2018 Confederations Cup in Russia - which they open with a clash against Germany on June 19.

Which exact day the Brazil vs Argentina match will take place will be dependent on the AFL season. Matches are already penciled in for the MCG on June 10, 12 and 17.
