Buffon Makes Save in Final Minute, Pellé Scores to Seal Italy Victory Over Spain

Italy upset Spain at Euro 2016 on strength last-minute Buffon save on Gerard Pique.

Giorgio Chiellini cleaned up a rebound off a free kick in the 33rd minute to give Italy a 1-0 lead, and they outplayed Spain the rest of the way to advance in the knockout round of Euro 2016. The match was not without some nervy moments, but veteran keeper Gianluigi Buffon came up with the big saves when needed, including one on Gerard Piqué in the 90th minute, yards away from goal.

A minute later, in stoppage time, Italy attacked on the counter and, with a tremendous ball across the pitch, found a huge swath of open space to drive to the goal. Matteo Darmian entered the penalty area and took a shot that was, unfortunately for Spain, deflected right to Pellé who scissored it past David de Gea on the volley to effectively end the game at 2-0.

Winning manager Antonio Conte is going to be getting a lot of praise for taking this substandard (for Italy) team on this run, which now includes a decisive win over the reigning Euro champs, and he's rightly charged up about it.
