Warp Records' Latest Signee Lafawndah Breaks Out With Meta New Video

The new track finds itself in an EP including production credits from Night Slugs' L-Vis 1990.

In an interview with Vogue earlier this year, Warp Records' latest signee Lafawndah describes her voice as like Sade's "but rougher," which is a weirdly-specific and audacious enough claim to make us intrigued from the get-go. It turns out that her music follows up on the strength of her pitch, as was demonstrated on her debut, self-titled EP earlier this year, and, indeed, on her new single, "Tan." Her unique style is also showcased on her latest music video to the new track where she preps an actress to sing her song, moving behind a rear curtain into an athletic display of contemporary dance.

The video's track features the first hint of her forthcoming EP of the same name, which comes with production credits by the star-studded cast of Nick Weiss (of Teengirl Fantasy), Tamer Fahri (of Dillon), ADR (of Gatekeeper), and Night Slugs' L-Vis 1990. The track itself, produced by Lafawndah, Fahri and Weiss, is quite experimental for how viscerally it hits—it's vaguely poppy, vaguely clubby—but its sparseness combined with strangeness makes for something a bit hard to categorize. All together, it's pretty rad.
