Leafs Have Worst Odds to Win 2017 Stanley Cup

It's OK. Auston Matthews is on the way.

The Toronto Maple Leafs are early favourites heading into the 2016-17 season… to lose, that is.

The Maple Leafs have the worst odds of winning the Stanley Cup next season, according to Bovada. The oddsmakers have the Leafs and Sabres tied in last with 66-1 odds, a significant drop from the next worst set of teams at 50-1. Considering the Leafs finished with a miserable 69 points last season—good for last in the league—no one should be surprised at their league-worst odds.

The Pittsburgh Penguins, who are probably just waking up from a long night of celebration, are early favourites to repeat in 2017, with an NHL-best 8-1 odds.

Other noteworthy teams include the Capitals and Blackhawks, tied in second at 10-1; the ever-so-close Sharks, tied in fourth at 14-1; and the Canadiens, who, at 20-1, have the best shot at finally bringing the Cup back north of the border. The Canadiens were the last Canadian-based team to win the Cup when they defeated the Wayne Gretzky-led Kings in five games in 1993.

Leafs fans do, however, have something to be excited about, as the team will soon select franchise centre Auston Matthews with the No. 1 overall pick in this month's NHL draft, and maybe even enter the Steven Stamkos sweepstakes.

If you're a truly confident Leafs fan, those factors might be good enough reason to place a bet. A $100 wager on the Leafs to win the Cup could make you $6,600 richer!
