The Belle Game Dream of Unrequited Love on "Only One"

A feverish, anthemic, smooth B-side from 'Fear/Nothing.'

Last year, Vancouver’s very own smooth electro-pop group, The Belle Game, released their dreamy sophomore Fear/Nothing. Produced by some of Cancon’s best (Kevin Drew from Broken Social Scene and Dave Hamelin from The Stills), the record is a whirling, ethereal haze over snappy beats. At only ten tracks, Fear/Nothing is a sharp record but still, one if left wanting more. The band, who are currently on tour across North America, have so benevolently released a dreamy B-side from the record called “Only One." The track is a sleepy, soft electro proclamation of love. Beginning with a deft, building drumbeat, “Only One” swoops in and wraps around you, looping you in again and again. Andrea Lo sings, yearning almost, “why can’t you say you love me now?”

“Only One is a fever dream of unrequited love. Not necessarily romantic, more of an unachievable comfort with our sense of self. It was one of the earliest songs we wrote for Fear/Nothing—a first practice in exercising feeling over logic,” the band said via email. “It’s an anthem for feeling out of place, a dehydrated trip through a desert and a cruise along the French seaside and a song kept amongst friends, until now.”
