Watch This Spooky-Ass 'Blade Runner 2049' Prequel

There have already been plenty of trailers for the upcoming Blade Runner sequel, Blade Runner 2049, featuring flying cars, giant lady holograms, and Jared Leto's freaky-ass eyeballs, all of which seem to point toward the fact that Denis Villeneuve may have actually made a proper sequel to Ridley Scott's 1982 sci-fi masterpiece.

Though the teasers have been superb, they've generally eschewed plot details in favor of mood and showing off Ryan Gosling's coat. Now, it looks like Villeneuve has taken pity on us and decided to throw some actual story information our way with a new short film called 2036: Nexus Dawn.

In anticipation of Blade Runner 2049's release this fall, Villeneuve reached out to three of his fellow directors to make short prequel films that fill in the gaps between the end of the original Blade Runner and the beginning of 2049. Collider premiered 2036: Nexus Dawn, the first of these shorts, on Tuesday, and it's a terrifying look at the rise of Jared Leto's character, Niander Wallace, a replicant builder who tries to make his case for the repeal of a law that made replicants illegal. Wallace's replicants—apparently called Nexus 9, according to Collider—are actually subservient, unlike those buggy Tyrell bots, and he has his replicant bodyguard prove it in the short.

Luke Scott, Ridley's son, directed Nexus Dawn, and it's a tense and unnerving five-minute short that feels right at home within the universe his father crafted. There's no word on when the next two shorts will debut, but they're set to drop some time ahead of Blade Runner 2049's October 6 premiere date.
