Two police officers were attacked in Belgium on Saturday by a man armed with a machete and shouting "Allahu Akhbar," Arabic for "God is great."

The incident took place outside a hotel in Charleroi, a post-industrial city about 30 miles (50 km) south of Brussels. Local police wrote earlier in a tweet that the suspect had been shot but was alive.

Belgian media later reported that he had died from his injuries. Both of the injured officers were women, and one is more seriously wounded than the other, the BBC reports.

Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel said he strongly condemned the attack. "My thoughts are with the victims, their loved ones, and the police. We are following the situation closely," he said.

There has not yet been any claim of responsibility.

Charleroi, Belgium's fifth-largest city, has been linked to possible Muslim extremist activity in the past.

Belgian prosecutors said earlier this year that the Islamic State militants involved in the attacks in Paris last November and in Brussels in March had used a false identity to rent an apartment in Charleroi, which they used as a hideout and base.

In 2005, Muriel Degauque from Charleroi, who was raised Catholic and was a Muslim convert radicalized by extremist Islamist ideology, died bombing a US convoy in Iraq, making her the first European woman to launch a suicide attack.
