Break with Tradition with This Rum-Based Old Fashioned

This drink packs a fragrant punch thanks to its heavy Thai influence.

Do you like the bitter and balanced tang of an Old Fashioned but need a bit of an extra lift? Maybe the Don Draper fantasy that so many whiskey drinkers bought into years ago just isn't potent enough to escape reality in 2017.

Well, we've got a recipe for you that's a riff on the classic cocktail but packs a fragrant punch thanks to its heavy Thai influence. Angostura bitters, chocolate bitters, and orange bitters are in total harmony with superfine sugar and makrut lime leaves here, and offset by rum.

"Rum in an Old Fashioned?" you ask? Yes, indeed. And it works really well. So, stop thinking and start drinking, because those orange peels aren't going to peel themselves.

RECIPE: Thai Old Fashioned

Employees Only principal bartender Dev Johnson designed this rum-based variation for Thai seafood-focused restaurant Fish Cheek and it's a surefire way to lift you out of whatever modern ennui you find yourself in. Escapism never tasted so good.
