Take an Intergalactic Trip with Sweyn Jupiter

Talking Diddy and death row with Night Slugs' newest star.

David Barseghian is better known to most of us as one of Twitter's highest typists and the man behind underground cult classic "Papaya Lipgloss" a track released this week on everyone's favourite purveyors of skeletally mutated bass music Night Slugs. This is Sweyn Jupiter.

When he's not turning the timeline inside out with warped internal meanderings and shout outs to forgotten baile funk tunes, Jupiter can be heard popping up on Radar Radio on the BBC Azn Network show alongside the likes of 2SHIN and NS-affiliate Manara, as well as playing out throughout London. He's also one third of gravity-defying avant-R&B act British Knights.

Given that "Papaya Lipgloss" is finally out there for real, after a year of existing on YouTube, we thought we'd catch up with the cosmically inclined producer for a quick chat.

THUMP: When did you transition into being Swyen Jupiter? What's the significance of that name?
Sweyn Jupiter: Sweyn Jupiter was just a highdea derived from a documentary I saw on Sweyn Forkbeard. I was just getting into production a couple years ago and just made sense to me. The name seemed to match my sound in a way. The Jupiter bit just came from my fascination with the universe.

When you're out and about are you David or Sweyn?
I introduce myself as David, I'm Sweyn once I'm in the studio.

You're pretty sick at Twitter but would you class yourself as an addict? And who're your top five tweeters?
Kinda, I regularly check it but I could definitely go without if asked. My top 5 would be 1) @cher 2) @total_freedom_ 3) @desusnice 4) @2SHIN 5) @youngthug.

How did you hook up with the Night Slugs lot?
Me and Alex (aka Bok Bok) had a few mutual friends and eventually we were introduced to each other. That led to a series of sessions at his studio where we just followed a vision and then produced the initial demo of "Papaya Lipgloss" within a few hours.

I've seen the Vines, I know you can play the keys like a madman. Are you trained or self-taught?
Initially I was classically trained from a young age but adolescence resulted in me growing distant from that so then I became self taught with jazz and blues. I tend to improvise to and sometimes notate what I play.

Can you tell me a little about your other production unit British Knights?
We're just three guys with an appreciation for 90s R&B and always tend to refer to that as inspiration. We've got a lot in the pipeline including a free EP dropping later this month.

Enough of the muso talk. Let's get real for the last two. For whatever reason - crimes of passion, crimes against fashion - you've ended up on death row. What's going on that final plate?
The death row last meal has to be lobster with garlic butter with a side of avocado

You managed to escape the penitentiary and have ended up at one of Diddy's all-white birthday bashes. What're you wearing?
A synthetic white fur hooded ski jacket with a full white velour DKNY tracksuit underneath and white patent loafers /Huaraches if trainers allowed.

Papaya Lipgloss is out now on Night Slugs and you can catch Sweyn Jupiter behind the decks at Body Party at London's Ace Hotel this Thursday.
