Blacky II - Nimrod Expedition [THUMP Exclusive]

The founder of NYC's underground party RINSED drops his first EP on SCI-FI & FANTASY.

Strolling through Williamsburg, Brooklyn on a Friday night is extremely risky. Step into the wrong bar and you're squashed between the armpits of bros and barbies fist-pumping to "Call Me Maybe." Follow a subterranean thump into the wrong warehouse and now you're sliding in tween raver puke. Play your cards right, and you could end up at RINSED—a nomadic dance party with an impressive knack for landing underground talent, including artists like Sepalcure, MK and XXXY in the last couple of months.

After spending the past three years helping the kids get weird, one of RINSED's founders, Blacky II, is finally dropping his first EP, Spirit of the Body. Each track clocks in at 135 bpm—faster than the average house ditty, but (thankfully) not stepping into hardstyle territory.

"Nimrod Expedition," the EP's third offering, layers R&B grooves over arpeggiated synthesizer rhythms, opting for bone dry, in-your-ear sounds rather than ethereal fields of reverb. What's results is a minimal skeleton tune that keeps reminding me of a squid pulsing through the water… while playing the xylophone.

Spirit of the Body lands on SC-IFI & FANTASY July 30. Preview the EP here.
