Tyrod Taylor has Surgery, Throws Curveball in Offseason Saga with Bills

It kind of seems like no one in the Bills organization actually communicates with each other. It's like instead of talking, they call one another late at night when they know no one will pick up and leave a voicemail. Because everyone knows nobody listens to voicemails anymore.

Then, when something happens, say like a coach gets fired, the GM can claim plausible deniability. Or, maybe if the starting quarterback has surgery, the Bills can release a statement that makes it seem like they were blindsided by the whole thing.

Oh, wait. That's exactly what happened. Rex Ryan got canned and GM Doug Whaley said he had no idea. And here's what Buffalo said today after Tyrod Taylor decided to undergo groin surgery:

Bills QB Tyrod Taylor had a consultation visit yesterday with Dr. William Meyers and elected to have surgery this morning. The Bills were informed late yesterday of this morning's procedure.

A story on the team's website added: "No other details on the procedure were provided."

You can understand why this choice might be contentious. Taylor was benched for the season finale in what the team called a business decision, probably because he has a $27.5 million guarantee in his contract for next year if the Bills cut him for injury reasons. If he's on the roster as of March 11, he'll get all that money. If he can't pass a physical by that date, he'll get all that money. Since the Bills are about to hire a new coach after missing the playoffs again, it stands to reason they might not want Taylor back next year, but now with the potential for the money already being guaranteed, they might as well keep him on the roster.

Having surgery and claiming an injury (ignoring the fact that football players are injured one way or another most of the time anyway) could earn Taylor some serious money, either all of it or some of it as part of a negotiated settlement. And he'd still get to leave Buffalo. He just had to make a business decision.
