Ah, invisibility. To simply disappear one’s self is sort of the recurring superpower dream, really – right up there with flight, or X-ray vision. “It just appeals to your imagination,” says David R. Smith, a cloaking researcher at Duke University.

We recently visited Smith’s lab to check out some of the world’s leading-edge metamaterials, to learn why the military is going so hoggish over the promise of cloaking, and to try and find out when all of our wildest invisibility dreams will come true. Spoiler alert: Really soon.
