In this day and age, personal messages are rarely tangible—they usually exist digitally in the form of a Tweet, e-mail, or text message. Raw Color, a Dutch design studio, has reimagined digital transmission in their latest project, a Cryptographer that generates textile patterns by translating words to code. This drawing machine is controlled by text messages and the generative patterns it produces are made of geometric icons that represent letters in a text. The machine writes the code on the fabric using a bleach pen attached to the head of the machine.
The icons are sorted by letter frequency in english, starting with the most commonly used ones.
