A Year of Lil Wayne: More Kush

As anyone who listens to lots of Lil Wayne knows, kush is Lil Wayne’s preferred type of marijuana upon which to puff.

Day 211: "Kush" feat. Rick Ross and Lil Wayne – Gunplay, single, 2013 / "Kush" – The Leak EP , 2008

All week, we've been talking about weed. And honestly, that has been hard for the Year of Lil Wayne—not because there's no weed to discuss but rather because I already wrote about my favorite Lil Wayne weed song, "Kush," where Wayne says that he's such a good rapper he feels like he's racing a bunch of little turtles. "Kush" is also a great Lil Wayne weed song because it is called "Kush," as anyone who listens to lots of Lil Wayne knows, kush is Lil Wayne's preferred type of marijuana upon which to puff. On the subject of kush, let us turn to the good folks at Leafly, the premier destination for cataloguing weed strains, for explanation. They say:

Kush is a particular variety of cannabis that descends from the Hindu Kush mountains. This mountain range spans the Afghanistan-Pakistan border and is one of the few geographic regions where the cannabis plant grows natively.

Having strong Kush genetics usually means a strain will have a few of the following attributes:

Appearance: Your strain may exhibit deep green colas and leaves with hints of purple. Pistils (hairs) can look orange, bronze, or rust colored. Buds are dense, chunky, and knotted, coming from squat, thick plants.

Smell: Aroma can vary between earthy, floral, pungent, pine, incense, sweet fruit, hash spice, pepper, citrus, gas, and herbs.

Flavor: Smoke or vapor should be smooth and herbaceous, tasting of flowers, grape, diesel, citrus, and earth.

Effects: Kush usually vacillates between hybrid and indica dominance. The effects are typically heavy and sedative. OG Kush crosses are usually coupled with a bright euphoria that puts a smile on the couch-locked consumer. Introspection or internal reflection is a common effect of Kush as well. These cerebral effects make a strong case for Kush as a meditative variety of cannabis.

"Bright euphoria that puts a smile on the couch-locked consumer"? Sounds right up Lil Wayne's alley. No wonder he smokes so much of it. Luckily for us, given Wayne's preference for kush, "Kush" is not the only song named "Kush" on which Lil Wayne appears. There is also the 2013 Gunplay song "Kush," which although it is also named "Kush," is not the same as "Kush" and in fact references yet another Lil Wayne kush-smoking anthem not named "Kush," the Birdman and Drake-featuring single "Money to Blow."

On "Money to Blow," Wayne sings about having "a big bouquet of Mary Jane's flowers," which is sampled for the hook of "Kush," by Gunplay. At the time of the song's release, I was skeptical because, of course, there is already an extremely good song called "Kush" by Lil Wayne and also because, as we're discussing, there is already an extremely good song with Lil Wayne that uses the phrase "a big bouquet of Mary Jane's flowers."

However, in retrospect, since Gunplay's career seems to have evaporated, I cannot be mad that the song "Kush" exists, even if it has the same title as "Kush," because it's the only instance of Wayne and Gunplay on a track together. I recommend listening to "Kush" for Gunplay, who is a good rapper, especially when he says he is "hippy blitzed / trippy sticks." But, as it turns out, I even more, um, highly recommend listening to "Kush" for Wayne, who offers one of his absolute most thorough verses about weed and might also be Wayne's only reference to acid. Also, the first stream of the song that comes up on YouTube is on the channel "WeedStrainReviews," which is hilarious.

I recommend listening to the other "Kush" by Lil Wayne, too, but first, here is that kush-loving verse in its entirety. Happy Weed Week:

I don't smoke no reggie
I don't smoke no mid
I'm always fucking high
So much we might have kids
And why you babysitting a blunt
That's that shit I don't like
I'm looking for one of these bad bitches
To come ride me like a turnpike
On some real shit I'm a pothead
Please don't blow my high, man
Look into my eyes and
It look like I'm from Thailand
I am smoking on that gas
Life should be on Cinemax
Smoking on that OG in that double-R
I'm Real Relaxed
I smoke so much kill they call me Killa
And I'm on that strong, I'm on that strong, bodybuilder
Light that shit and pass it
My white girl on that acid
But me I'm on that kush, that kush
