Take a Kaleidoscopic Tour of the Human Body (Blankets Included)

Sit back, relax, and journey inside 'Worry Will Vanish Horizon,' Pipilotti Rist's surreal reimagining of the human body.

Before visitors could enter Worry Will Vanish Horizon, artist Pipilotti Rist’s video installation at Hauser & Wirth's London, they had to take their shoes off and “release some of the social inhibitions that exist in the world outside.” From November 27, 2014 through January 10, 2015 white bean bag seats strewn across the plush carpeting invited them inside a world that was physically isolated by a denim curtain. In order to experience her turbulent, visceral visions, the artist wanted viewers to get comfortable.

Worry Will Vanish Horizon collaged natural imagery with an animated 3D tour inside human body, projecting body parts, blood vessels, the stippled surfaces of skin, and spiderwebs onto lengthy walls that met in a sharp corner. Juxtaposing computer-generated flesh with organic structures, the piece explored both internal and external worlds, uniting them all with a soundscape by musician Anders Guggisberg. Inspired by Autogenic Training, a method of facilitated relaxation by way of prone postures and repeated visualizations, Rist wanted viewers to leave the exhibition in a mental state where they would be "receptive to new ideas,” according to the press release.

In the past, Rist compared her film installations to handbags “because there is room in them for everything: painting, technology, language, music, flowing pictures, poetry, commotion, premonitions of death, sex and friendliness.” Below, gaze into Rist’s pulsing pouch of patterns and textures:
