Step Inside The Light Forest

In London, students and faculty come together to create a fantastic, living installation.

AA Summer DLAB "Light Forest" Exhibition AA Back Members' Room from AI.

First displayed as a working prototype of the Architectural Association (AA) Summer DLAB Visiting School, which took place at AA London and AA Hooke Park during 22 July – 04 August 2013, Light Forest (above) is meant to be a growing, illuminated sculptura installation.

Created to act as a "living system," Light Forest is a complex structure built of kinetic parts, created to shift and distort the illusion of space when put into motion. Much like a real living creature, Light Forest contains a central nervous system--in addtion to a tessellated, kinetic surface that allows the sculpture to interact directly with visitors. In addition to a synthetic nervous system, Light Forest also contains a patterned "field of filaments," creating the brain of the piece--able to receive external stimuli and signals. As the brain picks up on these shifts, the internal organs of the living sculpture generate various light formations and patters. So as you poke and prod, the sculpture reacts much like (an incredibly patient) real animal. For more, check out the video above.
