Watch VICE News' Webby-nominated coverage of Hurricane Harvey's aftermath

Our video coverage of the historic storm's devastating effects was nominated for "Best Social Video Series" in the 2018 Webby Awards.

Last August, Hurricane Harvey unleashed more than 60 inches of rainfall onto Texas over a few days in a historic weather event that crippled the Houston area for months. Its immediate effects — swiftly rising waters, overwhelming winds, downed utilities and compromised medical care — killed more than 100 people. Even the National Weather Service was at a loss: Days after Harvey first hit the mainland United States, it tweeted, “This event is unprecedented & all impacts are unknown & beyond anything experienced.”

But it wasn’t until the rain stopped, when Texans returned to find their homes and businesses ruined, that the real extent of Harvey’s devastation became clear.

In the days after the waters receded, people across Houston vacuumed mud up off their floors, peeled sheetrock from their walls, trashed waterlogged mattresses and family heirlooms and expensive bottles of wine. Overall, Harvey caused about $125 billion worth of damage, a number topped only by Hurricane Katrina.

VICE News’ coverage of Houstonians’ efforts to put their lives back together, and the military’s attempts to help them, was nominated for “Best Social Video Series” in the 2018 Webby Awards. Watch some of the series below, and vote for the “People’s Votes” Webby here.
