Shamir Brings Iconic Memes to Life in His New “90’s Kids” Video

He also announced a new album, 'Revelations', out November 3.

If you were born in the 90s, or 00s actually, you probably spend hours on end after dark scrolling through memes that you couldn't really explain to aliens, or indeed your parents, even if you tried (eVEn iF yOu tRIEd!!). And if you do a lot of the aforementioned, you're probably familiar with that vague sense of dread and escapism that comes hand in hand with burying yourself inside the internet, particularly after staring at memes until your eyes feel dry and sore. It's kind of fun and shitty at the same time.

Shamir's new video for "90's Kids" is about that, and he's recreated a bunch of iconic memes in the process, set to a backdrop of old school Windows desk top graphics that you'll recognise if you're of the age when you can still clearly remember MSN Messenger and the bleeping, honking and static sound of dial-up internet connecting. The result is a strange and brilliant existential ode to Buzzfeed-induced procrastination and millennial nostalgia. The track itself also dives into these themes, flipping a defiant two fingers up at the still media inescapable trend painting millennials and teens as work-shy big babies. Shamir's voice is as beautiful as always, floating over the minimal guitar strums to create a lo-fi ballad that sits somewhere between country, punk and whatever else you can call what Shamir makes.

He's also announced a new album, Revelations, which is out 3 November via Father/Daughter and is available to pre-order here. Peep the tracklist below and watch the video above.
