Your Labor Day BBQ Needs These Summery Desserts

Any other time, rolling through with a store-bought ice cream cake would suffice—but this is the last hurrah of summer, and you’ve got to show some respect.

OK, so it's the last cookout of the season and you've been relegated to the role of dessert-bearer. Any other time, rolling through with a store-bought ice cream cake would suffice—but this is the last hurrah of summer, and you've got to show some respect.

There are a few ways you can approach this one. If you're really ready to commit to the dessert game, crank your A/C on high and your oven to 375 for this lemon blueberry chess pie. Somewhere between a pie and a cheesecake, it's fruity and bright enough to serve on a hot day. Plus, you made the crust from scratch, so you're the hero of the day.

With a little extra time and effort, you could strut into the function with a boozy berry trifle, the most aesthetically pleasing dessert your Instagram feed has ever seen. Besides that, it's got all the elements of a foolproof crowd-pleaser: cake, custard, fruit, booze, and crunchy bits.

This isn't to say you have to while away an entire afternoon to prep a killer dessert. If you just have enough time to cut up some fruit and switch the stand mixer on, you've got rustic strawberries with macadamia nuts and whipped cream. It takes ten minutes and still manages to blow Fudgie the Whale out of the water.

No matter which route you choose, your effort won't go unnoticed. Summer, this one's for you—you will be missed.
