Chicago producer and DJ Jason Garden, aka Olin, has shared the Conne EP, marking the debut release on his own Boundary Monument imprint. The three-track record finds the resident DJ and talent buyer for the acclaimed Smart Bar venue hitting a different register with each cut—where the lead, title track is for the most part restrained and contemplative, "Foist" is psychedelic and disorienting. The closer, "Biota," evokes serene and simmering euphoria, teasing out a classic chord and arpeggio interplay.

Garden gave THUMP some background for why he started Boundary Monument via email. "After years of threatening to do it, I finally started a label with guidance from my insanely amazing friends over at Stripped & Chewed," he said. "As with most people who start labels that feature exclusively their work, my motivation is largely selfish: I really hate shopping tracks and constantly having to revise things to accommodate for another person's vision throughout the process. I want to be able to curate my own sound unencumbered, and the amazing folks at Diamonds and Pearls afforded me the ability to do just that.

"The 'idea' behind the label is basically a pretty on-the-nose metaphor," he added. "A boundary monument is 'a robust physical marker that identifies the start of a land boundary or the change in a boundary, especially a change in direction of a boundary.' So, it's a fitting descriptor for a vinyl label featuring music from a person who tends to have a bit of a schizophrenic approach to music."

In June, Garden told us about the last three records he purchased, and they range from the totally atonal to the beautifully deep.

Conne will be released on November 4 and is the artist's second release of the year, following his From Iceland single on Gieglingsub-label g~g~~g in April.
