Video: Mineo - "Turn Out the Lights"

Pigalle's seedy underbelly captured in stereoscopic glory. Who said hipsters are ruining Paris?

In case you haven't heard, the cultural savants at the New York Times have declared that hipsters are ruining Paris by turning it into… drumroll please… Brooklyn. Awww shit. According to Thomas Chatterton Williams, whom others have pointed out is a former Brooklyn resident himself, the transsexual hookers and "the whiff of dirt and sex in the air" in areas like Pigalle—Paris' infamous red-light district—have been replaced by baby boutiques that stock cashmere swaddle blankets and upscale American cocktail bars. Quelle horreur! I guess this what Paris deserves for coining the phrase, "très Brooklyn." Idiots.

But really, this video for "Turn Out the Lights" by Hot Creation's Mineo (aka Tom Dinsdale from London's Audio Bullys) disproves the notion that Paris has turned into the land of kale frittatas and juice cleanses. Unlike the tired "one night out on the town" narrative you see so often in electronic music videos—you know, various scenes of champagne-spraying partying and bullshit—this one peels back the gentrification to show Paris in all of its delightfully seedy glory.

Perfectly timed to the deeply grooving afterhours track, we follow Mineo's rollicking tour of the city's underbelly—its massage parlors, dinky carnival rides, and filthy basement clubs all captured in stuttering stereoscopy by director PEJ, who makes even pissing into a toilet look cool. A sign of true talent.
