This week something magical happened on Twitter: biologists around the world started sharing photos of adorable creatures in a "cute-off" competition. It started out with one conservationist posing the question of whether bat-eared foxes were cuter than baby bears and quickly snowballed. All kinds of nature lovers were submitting contenders, adding hashtags for different teams including team mammal, team herpetology (for amphibians and reptiles), and even team fungi (aww, lil mushies).

Towards the end of the week the trend got co-opted by people just posting photos of their pets (because there's nowhere else on the internet you can find pictures of cats), but through it all we got to see tons of photos of the sweetest species on the planet.

We all know baby koala bears and tiny turtles are adorable, but there were also some lesser-known, somewhat unexpected cuties in the competition.
