This Ed Sheeran Performance on SNL Was Probably Alright, but I Couldn't Sit Through the Whole Thing Myself

He played 'Shape of You" and "Castle on the Hill," apparently.

In the last few weeks, Saturday Night Live has warmed up to its role as chief antagonist to our thin-skinned overlord. The cast has been making headlines of its own and, according to reports, the sketches are having an impact on Donald Trump's staff picks. Last night, Alec Baldwin, who so irked the stair-fearing racist in the Oval Office, hosted for the 17th time in his career, a new record.

Ed Sheeran was last night's musical guest and his performance was probably fine, but, what, you expect me to sit and watch the whole thing? It's not that I didn't try, but "Shape of You" wanted so badly to be exciting that I felt bad for the song itself. It was as though the notes had come to life and then immediately grown dispirited. And "Castle on the Hill" opened with the line "When I was six years old I broke my leg" which is roughly as enticing a lyric as it is as a pick-up line.
