Baylor Fires Assistant Director of Football Ops for Sending Inappropriate Texts to a Teenager

It seems Baylor University can't even go one month without courting controversy. Waco TV station KWTX learned Monday night that assistant director of football operations DeMarkco Butler has been let go by the university for sending inappropriate text messages to a teenager.

According to an official with the university, the individual in question is considered an adult under Texas law, which means they are at least 18.

David Kaye, Baylor's director of athletics communications, made a statement about the Butler incident on Monday: "DeMarkco Butler is no longer employed by Baylor University. As a personnel matter, we have no further comment."

Butler was hired by incoming head coach Matt Rhule, who was hired in December. Rhule has been tasked with cleaning up the program's image following the disgusting, systematic cover-up of numerous alleged rapes by Baylor players under former head coach Art Briles.

Unfortunately, the new regime hasn't exactly gotten the job done over its first three months in charge. Assistant strength coach Brandon Washington, another Rhule hire, was fired in February after he was arrested in a Waco prostitution sting.

Just last Thursday, interim president David Garland told the Chronicle of Higher Education that he didn't know of another school in the country that had been as transparent as Baylor in its handling of a sex scandal that now includes a lawsuit alleging 52 instances of rape by 31 football players. "From a Christian perspective," he said, "we've confessed our sins, tried to repent and tried to make restitution."
