Belichick Is Already In Midseason Form With Grumpy Press Conferences

Last we heard from New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, he was lamenting that winning the Super Bowl had put his team at a disadvantage because they were too busy winning the Super Bowl to prepare for next year. Well, the good news is he thinks the team has "caught up" thanks to the relentless passage of time.

"I think it's the being behind in draft, free agency and that type of thing. I think at this point, we're ready for OTAs. We'll be ready for training camp. I think that part of it we'll be on schedule on. It's the catching up on all the spring projects, draft and free agency."

The key phrase for today's press conference was apparently "we'll see how it goes." When asked what traits new wideout Brandin Cooks has that made the team willing to give up a first and third-round pick, Belichick replied that Cooks is a "good player" before adding "we'll see how it goes." When asked if he's pleased with Gronk's offseason work and the shape he's in, Belichick replied, "Yeah, I mean, we'll see how it goes. We've only practiced a couple days. We've got a long way to go, but we'll see how it goes." Nobody asked him about the music video.

The joy of Belichick's press conferences is imagining him with this level of animosity during everyday interactions. "That'll be $46.89. Cash or credit?" "There are certain forms of payment I plan on using. We'll see how it goes."

To wrap it up, someone asked Belichick if he has any favorites for the NCAA Lacrosse championships being held at Gillette Stadium this weekend. A noted lacrosse enthusiast, he still couldn't bring himself to say anything of substance. "Yeah, pretty competitive group" was the best he could do. That's Mike Francesa-level analysis.

Overall, this wasn't quite "we're onto Cincinnati," the 28-3 second-half comeback of Belichickian press conferences, but it's a solid Week 8 performance. There's still a lot of work to do, though. We'll see how it goes.
