Hear a New Craig Finn Song from His Split with Kevin Devine

The Hold Steady has slowed down a bit in recent years. The beloved rock band that once toured heavily and reliably released albums on a nearly annual schedule has been prone to long bouts of inactivity lately. But the group broke a cold snap this month with another pair of singles on Bandcamp to benefit the K+L Guardian Foundation, and today, frontman Craig Finn has dropped a new single of his own for Kevin Devine’s seven-inch split series with “Galveston.”

“Galveston” immediately pulls you into the world Finn has become an expert at crafting through his narrative songwriting. It has all the markings of classic Finnean storytelling—a mention of a waitress to kick it off, some casual namedropping of American cities like Corpus Christi and Texas City, and themes of faith, Jesus, and the devil. It's a great addition to the Devinyl Splits, which has featured everyone from Tigers Jaw to Nada Surf’s Matthew Caws. The next edition (volume eight if you’re counting) will include Scranton’s Petal.
