Somalia is on the brink of famine. About 6.2 million Somalis are urgently in need of aid right now, and that number is likely to increase. The UN says that the make or break element at this point is rain, and while rainy season is supposed to start in a few weeks, the forecasts predict more drought.

In the last two months, nearly 160,000 people have been displaced due to the severe drought conditions and around 360,000 children are severely malnourished.

U.N. Emergency Relief Coordinator Stephen O’Brien described the encroaching famine in four countries — Nigeria, Somalia, South Sudan and Yemen — as “largest humanitarian crisis” since 1945.
