Dubstep Innovator Gemmy Tries out New Styles On "Lost Love"

Bristol-based producer Gemmel Phillips, a.k.a. Gemmy, today shared a heavy new track off his upcoming Bamboozled EP. The record marks Phillips' first solo release in over four years—the last one being 2012's Warrior / The Dome single on Tectonic—and on "Lost Love" he deftly pairs agitation with sensitivity. Passing its main melody back and forth between plaintive pianos and distorted synths, the track's sense of frustrated mournfulness is further intensified by a pitched-down vocal sample.

"The title came from issues with family breakdowns, and the fact that love doesn't last forever in some cases," he explained over email. "I started the track off with a piano sounds and began working with some relaxing chords. The aim was also to fulfill the other side of the spectrum, so I decided to add grit and energetic drums, and fused it all together."

"For a long time I considering not using it, as the track was so different to other pieces of music I was making at the time. It was only when close DJs and producers were telling me it was amazing that I decided to include it in my new EP."

Bamboozled will be out May 12 on Phillips' own label World Of Wonders, and is available for pre-order.
