Vanilla Hammer Shares Lush and Dreamy Video for "African Minerals"

A museum-like tour through hi-def footage of rare minerals is soundtracked by experimental beats.

UK label Kaleidoscope has been a seriously reliable source for gurgling, sputtering, and hissing electronic experiments over the last several years. Helmed by patten, a London-based artist who has released on labels like Warp and No Pain In Pop, they've been early supporters of the likes of Sculpture (who have gone on to release on 0PN's label) and Karen Gwyer (who has also been on No Pain In Pop and Opal Tapes.)

Earlier this year, they released Diss Patches, an EP of musique concréte beat tape stylings from Tel Aviv artist Vanilla Hammer, and now one of the release's track "African Minerals" has a video. It's a dreamy, museum-like tour through lush footage of rare minerals, working interestingly against the sparkling textures of the track.

Emailing with THUMP about the video via email, the artist gave the following background: "Africa is the source for us as a species, but we've mostly abandoned it, we've lost touch with our origins, and we'd rather go into space and try and live on Mars than sort things out right here," he explains. "Those two options pretty much amount to the same thing though resource-wise, except that by chasing the sci-fi fantasy of space travel, we've maybe given up on ourselves in a way."
