Nothing Beats Spontaneous Afternoon Swims and a Smooth Open Road

"Always go chasing waterfalls."

This article is part of our VICE Weekends summer series, presented by Weis

Tim Swallow is a Sydney-based photographer with a portfolio that stretches across fashion, portraiture and music. He's also one half of creative studio, Lagoon Collective alongside cinematographer Ed Triglone.

Tim's a big fan of living life with a surfboard, skateboard and camera close at hand. Even when he's not working he still shooting, and it's a refined and spontaneous lens through which he sees the world. We asked Tim to pick out some of his favourite travel memories and he's delivered a chunk of good times from Busselton to Big Sur. It's a wildly scenic ride that'll take you from a prehistoric reservoir in Texas to the last original clay speedway in Bunbury and all sorts of beautiful blue bodies of water in-between.

Stripping your worries back to the open road and where the next swell is coming from has always been a cleansing experience for me. Breathing in the fresh air and letting go as we enter Big Sur, CA

We skated along a smooth open road in Western Australia and came across a huge gathering of Kangaroos. I don't know why, but we kicked up our boards and ran into the bush to join them. Busselton, WA

Eight metres underground we found ourselves in a prehistoric reservoir rumoured to have magical mud with healing powers. After covering ourselves we burst into laugher at the ridiculous situation we had found ourselves in. Luling, TX

One of the last original clay speedways left, we watched on in terror as the V12s roared pass. With the smell gasoline in our nostrils and grit in our teeth, we smiled the night away. Bunbury, WA.

I almost never drive past this spot without taking in the view. The gateway to the south coast, the passage to freedom. Stanwell Park Lookout, NSW

Even if it's brief, nothing beats taking over the streets for a roll. Busselton, WA

Bowling and brews. Delightfully tacky. Austin, TX

Always go chasing waterfalls. Wattamola Beach, NSW

An abandoned timber mill tower seemed a fitting place to watch the sunset. Camera in hand I was hoping to photograph my friend Ricky at the top as the light faded. It fizzled to nothing and lead us to capturing this shot on the way back down. Reinscourt, WA

Hiking into the vast sand dunes for sunrise was raw and harsh, yet beautiful. Lancelin, WA
