The Evolution Of FPS Graphics From The Nineties To Now

FPS games are a serious business and so is representing how the game’s aesthetic evolved.

If you’re a gamer, then you’ve no doubt whiled away plenty of time playing first person shooters. They may be one of the most ubiquitous of genres—no one is crying salt tears because the selection of FPS titles is so limited—but they’re what you might call a seminal genre for gaming.

And while more experimental games are on the rise with the whole idea of what constitutes a video game changing the FPS will, like the platformer, always have a special place in gamers’ hearts, even if it’s just for nostalgic reasons. Because everyone’s got an FPS that defined their lives at one point, be it Doom or GoldenEye 007 or Half-Life.

The video above traces the evolution of the graphics of these types of games from Wolfenstein 3D (1992) to Battlefield 3 (2011), showing how the pixels became less noticeable, the movements less jerky, and the sound effects less funky. And before you start going “BUT WHERE THE HECK IS GOLDENEYE??!!!” the makers of the vid have limited it to one game per year (you can see the full list here, but it’s all in French so have your Google Translate skills handy)—and dealt with games that made leaps and jumps in computer graphics rather than just being awesome games.

Still, “WHERE THE HECK IS GOLDENEYE??!!!”
