The Strange Magic of Everyday Moments During a European Summer

"I'm often too charmed by what's unfolding to take a photo but sometimes I'm lucky."

Kiwi photographer Robyn Daly has spent the last five months travelling around Europe. She journeyed from the south of France to a music festival in the Czech Republic, took a train from Berlin to Warsaw, and then soaked up the sun on a remote island in Greece. It's been a big summer.

VICE: Where exactly did you travel to?
Robyn: I was in Paris for about five months and in that time I visited the south of France, a music festival in Kutná Hora, Prague, Berlin, Warsaw, Athens, and Samos island in Greece.

How does Kutná Hora do music festivals?
The festival I went to is called Creepy Teepee. It runs for three days in an apple orchard just outside of the city but it feels super isolated. There's a big old gymnasium down the road where people can stay for cheap and they have home brew apple cider and beers on tap, and two different stages on rotation. There were, like, 50 local and international artists from all over the place, including a few from Australia, which was cool to see. It was so much fun, I'd go again for sure.

What were some other highlights of your European summer holiday?
Getting a special visit from a friend back home.

Who else did you meet along the way?
Mostly creative people from different parts of the world, who were making things happen with their art and challenging themselves. A few who have become close friends.

Was there anything you found particularly surprising on your travels?
The insane amount of street cats in Greece.

What do you try to capture when you explore a new place?
I like to photograph everyday scenes that have a bit of magic to them. I get obsessed with colour combinations or faces that look like they could belong in a different century. The sunlight and the street colours in European cities are so different than what I'm used to, so a really normal scenario can seem illuminated like a film set. I'm often too charmed by what's unfolding to take a photo but sometimes I'm lucky.

What do you hope people feel when they see Europe through your eyes?
My favourite images are ones that are hard to place and the context is lost. It's more about striking an emotion than knowing the reality. I don't know how people will feel looking at my photos, but for me they're a reminder that living somewhere special for too long can make you jaded.
