Bill Clinton's Novel Just Got Picked Up for a Showtime Series

The show will be based on Clinton and James Patterson's joint novel, 'The President Is Missing.' It's about a missing president, apparently.

Bill Clinton's mysterious foray into genre fiction, The President Is Missing, won't hit shelves until next summer, but Showtime has already secured the rights to adapt the novel into a TV show, Deadline reports.

The book—which Clinton co-wrote with the world's premier paint-by-numbers author, James Patterson—doesn't have much in the way of plot details yet, save for the whole absentee president thing, so it's hard to know what kind of series the adaptation will become.

But from the publisher's description—a mix of "intrigue, suspense, and behind-the-scenes global drama"—it's safe to assume Showtime's hoping that The President Is Missing will fill the political thriller space Homeland will leave behind once the series comes to a close in a few years.

"Bringing The President Is Missing to Showtime is a coup of the highest order," Showtime CEO David Nevins said in a statement. "The pairing of President Clinton with fiction's most gripping storyteller promises a kinetic experience, one that the book world has salivated over for months and that now will dovetail perfectly into a politically relevant, character-based action series for our network."

James Patterson has already penned enough books to keep a middle-aged dad occupied for multiple lifetimes, and is no stranger to film and TV. His Alex Cross novels have been adapted into a handful of films to varying degrees of success, and a show based on his book Zoo is currently airing on CBS with a second series due out next year.

"I'm really enjoying writing this book and working with Jim," Clinton said. "I can't wait to see Showtime bring the characters to life."

The President Is Missing, the novel, is scheduled for release in June 2018. No word yet on when the adaptation will hit Showtime.
