This article contains spoilers. The Revenant is, perhaps, a movie about a bearded Leonardo DiCaprio learning that nature is brutal, but not as brutal as humanity. One of the most brutal—virally so—scenes is when he gets tossed around like a chew toy by a massive bear, then at the last minute remembers he has a knife and stabs it to death. It's not for the faint of heart, but those who can stomach it have a lot to say about the bear, from dissecting how Industrial Light and Magic made it, to admitting that no smartphone-wielding 90s baby would survive it, to even speculating that the bear was actually getting frisky with DiCaprio's character, Hugh Glass, in between chomping sessions.Whatever your projection, The Revenant's bear was mythic enough for illustrator and graphic designer Matt Lu to spend several weeks putting together this intricate patchwork rendition of the majestic creature, claws sharp and mouth agape. Lu makes vaguely spritual-looking illustrations of all sorts of animals, from sly foxes to giant octopi. The bear is his latest, and perhaps greatest work, but check out more examples of his extensively detailed style in the Instagrams below.
