How Axel Boy Became the "Feelsiest" Producer on Buygore

The Bristol-based artist shows his sensitive side in switching from dubstep to future bass.

Precocious Bristolian talent Axel Boy launched his rising star in the ruckus of heavy dubstep, most recently with a release on tear-out stalwarts Never Say Die. His new EP, titled Feels and released on the typically raunchy Buygore, finds him showing a more sensitive side.

"I've spent a lot of time listening to dubstep and making it it has a big place in my heart," says Axel Boy, real name Alexander Joyce. "But I've been experimenting with more melodic bass music for about a year and a half now. This kind of music comes more from the heart. It's more listenable and it touches more emotions."

Feels also finds Joyce experimenting with laying down his own vocals for the first time, a bold creative move that most producers do not endeavor. "I have a bit of singing experience," he says. "I'm no Michael Jackson but I can lay down a few verses if need be!" Both "Liberty Flute" and "Feel Like I Do" feature Joyce's vocals.

The three-track EP delves deep into the future bass aesthetic and Axel's touch for melody is laid front and center. The change in direction piqued the ears of BBC Radio's Introducing series, for which he just dropped his first guest mix. "It was really sick," he laughs. "And it was my first interview on FM radio!"
