Miguel Migs Writes Songs for the Soul

Stream the soulful-house pioneer's new album in its entirety and hear how after three albums he's still paving his own road into our hearts.

While others yearn for the brain-rattling turn-up, San Francisco DJ and producer Miguel Migs has always longed to simply and effortlessly, keep it soulful. A notable remixer and early figure in the mid-90s wave of chilled-out house, Migs is gearing up to release his fourth artist album, Dim Division, a fifteen track rundown through breezy deep-house vibes and euphoric vocals all backdropped by a handful of club-ready rockin' rhythms. "I love the whole creative process of crafting a song and when I write music I always gravitate towards a more soulful approach naturally—working with different vocalists on this album I wanted to strip things down a bit, leaving more space overall and focusing more on the songs and sounds," Migs told THUMP.

While a different brand of vocal-tinged deep house is storming the charts throughout the UK, Migs explained that most of his inspiration comes not from dance music, but more through the lenses of rock and soul. After giving the LP a full listen, you can sense the attention towards "songs" and not just collections of vocal-led drops purely aimed at the dancefloor. Dim Division is as effective a play-in-your-headphones as it is in the club.

"Music is definitely a very personal thing and being a producer, DJ, and songwriter can be an interesting balance…but I've never really been about just following trends—I always do what I'm feeling and the music I create tends to turn out with a soulful feel, even if that's not what I'm trying to do," said Migs.

While I hate to relate with cliché music writer terms like "sexytime" music, Dim Division has the potential to soundtrack your most carnal of Thursday night activites. Even Migs himself eluded to the LP's bedroom sensibilities: "The original album title was actually going to be Dim Light Division referring to keeping the lights down low for a warm atmospheric vibe." Ooh La La, Miguel!
