Yasiel Puig Channels His Inner Mutombo After Play Is Overturned

Yasiel Puig's reign as the greatest thing to happen to Baseball Internet continues.

Exactly one year ago today, on Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Miguel Montero's birthday, Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig rounded third while attempting to score but was gunned down at the plate. As he was returning to the dugout, he looked back at the Birthday Boy and was treated to the infamous Dikembe Mutombo finger wag from the birthday boy.

Puig was probably confused. Having come over to the United States from Cuba, he likely had never heard of Mutombo and didn't understand the significance of Montero wagging his finger at him.

He probably did research later that night and, after finding its origin, came to realize Montero was mocking him.

That was fuel to the fire. You don't embarrass Yasiel Puig. He doesn't give a shit if it's your birthday. For one year he's been waiting for his chance to have sweet revenge and show off that he too is well-versed in 90s NBA arcana.

That moment finally came last night in the Dodgers' game against the Detroit Tigers. Torii Hunter drives one deep to right, Puig catches the ball after it caroms off the wall, and fires a bullet to get a sliding Hunter at second.

Not too shabby. Or so it seemed.

Tigers manager Brad Ausmus quickly came out of the dugout to challenge the play. It took the boys in New York a while to come to a decision, but it was overturned and Hunter was called safe.

Puig reacted accordingly.

What's Spanish for "You won't be so lucky next time?"

He might have not realized it at the time, but the 23-year-old Dodgers star just put himself in prime position to make (more) bank and star in the next GEICO commercial opposite a certain retired NBA center. Dude's a marketing genius.

So when you witness that commercial on the big screen, be sure to thank Miguel Montero for pissing Puig off and planting the seed of something special in an ad agency employee's head.
