Let's Talk Budget Sci-Fi on Today's Open Thread

Good morning, Wapointeers. It's your friendly Managing Editor here to start off a new feature here on Pilot Week: open threads! Every morning, one of the staff will start out the day with one of these, where we'll muse about something we're playing, watching or listening to, and opening up the floor for folks to chat.

I basically cannot get enough of Orphan Black right now, a sort of slightly campy, very compelling sci-fi series about Toronto. Well, ok, it's actually about a woman (Tatiana Maslany), and her clones (all played by Maslany). Her many, many clones, all of which are tied by their origins in a secret, shadowy lab/science collective, and all of whom have a crisis of identity when they find out 1. That she is a clone and 2. That her life is in danger.

You may know this about me, but I LOVE me some budget sci-fi (and all sci-fi, but there's a special place in my heart for "trashcan eclairs"), and sci-fi that is primarily about women's lives, and identity, and what the concept of self means in the face of a BIG QUESTION like the possibility of cloning. I'm so in.

How about you, readers? Do you have sub-genres (or even sub-sub genres) that really speak to you? Something that you'll rush to watch/play/read even if it may not be the greatest work in the world, because you know you'll find something to love in it?
