Between Sept. 1940 and May 1941, the city of London was attacked by Germany in 71 different air raids, 57 of those being on consecutive nights. Roughly a million homes were leveled, and some 40,000 civilians lost their lives. The scale, like most events of mass destruction, is difficult to grasp with numbers, maybe even with individual pictures. Compiled from official bomb censuses taken during the Blitz and collected in the National Archives, Bombsight.org has mapped every known bomb dropped on the city. It's weird to look at the map and think not just about how amazing it is the city still exists, but about how one modern-day nuke could do the job that eight months of conventional bombing couldn't. Be sobered.
