Throughout the world of sport, there are few pre-game rituals as electrifying – and terrifying – as the haka. The Maori war dance, historically performed by warriors on the battlefield, is seen as the ultimate challenge to an opponent. The All Blacks have made 'Ka Mate' iconic, performing it before test matches since the 1920s.

But if you want a true haka that exists outside the polish of the All Blacks, head to small towns in the most isolated parts of New Zealand – they'll get the hairs right up on the back of your neck.

Ngati Tuhoe – who performed the haka before their match against Waikato – have their ancestral homelands in the Urewera Forest, an isolated and heavily bushy area of the North Island's East Cape. Tuhoe have a long-held tradition as a people resistant to Pakeha attempts to change their culture, with more than 40 per cent of the tribe's members (up to 50,000 in total) still speakers of fluent Maori.

That passion for their culture comes through loud and clear in this haka. Waikato went on to win 12-4, but, let's be honest, no one will remember that scoreline. This haka, on the other hand, will echo for some time.
