Cyclist Seriously Injured in High-Speed Crash at Tour of Utah

Irish cyclist Matt Brammeier was involved in a scary and violent crash in Utah this weekend resulting in fractured ribs, a punctured lung, and fractures to his pelvic and sacral bones.

Irish cyclist Matt Brammeier suffered multiple injuries on Saturday when he lost control of his bike and slammed into a moving car at a hairpin turn called Guardsman Pass in the Tour of Utah. The steep turn is already treacherous, but the addition of team cars whizzing around alongside the cyclists makes this a disaster waiting to happen. Brammeier clearly lost control of his bike, and who knows where he would have wound up if he hadn't hit the car, but he did hit the car and it was ugly.

Here's another angle from just behind the crash:

He essentially T-boned the car, went flying in the air, and then crashed back down on the pavement. He suffered fractured ribs on both sides of his chest, a punctured lung, and a broken pelvis. MTN Qhebeka Team Doctor Jarrad Van Zuydam made the announcement, noting that Brammeier did not suffer any head, neck, or spinal injuries. He will most likely not need surgery either, just time to heal.
