My Favorite Robot’s "Magneto" Captures That Eerie End-Of-Night Feeling

The Canadian trio returns with their two-track 'Glass To The End' EP.

The Canadian trio My Favorite Robot, consisting of Jared Simms, James Teej, and Voytek Korab, has always focused on ignoring the norm and exploring the farthest reaches of electronic music. Formed in 2002, they created their own self-titled label in 2008 and has established themselves as artful and eclectic craftsmen and major players in the Canadian electronic music scene. Their atmospheric and engaging releases have featured on labels such as Crosstown Rebels, No.19 Music, and Life and Death, but they now return to their own label for the upcoming two-track Glass To The End EP.

The opener, "Magneto," is a dark and deep journey through group member Korab's sing-song vocals, warm, poignant synths, and emotionally investing melodies—think late-night Sasha during one of his club sets. Dramatic, and featuring a dash of the theatric, it is, in the words of techno guru Alan Fitzpatrick, "a genuine bomb [and] a great closing track. The vibe perfectly reflects that warm, emotional end-of-night feeling."

The trio was also kind enough to share their top seven tracks that influenced them as a group. Check out the full list below, and make sure to pick up the Glass To The End EP on March 23 via My Favorite Robot Records.

My Favorite Robot: Ride - "Leave Them All Behind"

: We were still in high school when this came out but it has really influenced the way we write melodies with its gloomy but somehow uplifting nature.

Happy Mondays - "Loose Fit"

: One of the coolest and craziest bands that were making dance-y tunes with really witty vocals.

Thom Yorke - "Hearing Damage"

: Probably one of our favourite Thom Yorke songs although we love them all. We still play this in our DJ sets once in a while. Incredible melodies.

Orbital - "Halcyon"

: Just an amazing, feel good electronic tune that will always bring back amazing memories. Great straight up percussion, awesome energy, and looping vocals that melt your face. This was a big tune from the early '90s when we started listening to electronic music.

NIN - "The Frail" and "The Wretched"

: More of an interlude and song transition, these two have always really inspired us and are a good example of the type of melodic and intensity quality that ends up being an aim in our songs. We incorporate some of these into a less raw/loud sound, we have been heavily inspired by Trent Reznor's work, so that influence is definitely there.

Talking Heads - "Take Me To The River

"

: We were all raised with a lot of early psychedelic rock and folk music, so that has always had a big effect on us in arrangement, and melodies.
