Kyla Thought It Was a Joke When She Found Out Drake Wanted to Sample Her On "One Dance"

"We signed papers and I still didn't believe it. I had a feeling someone was gonna say to me 'April Fools'."

Last week, we did some digging to find out the sample in Drake's new track "One Dance" featuring Wizkid & Kyla, and it turned out to be UK funky production team Crazy Cousinz's 2008 remix of Kyla's "Do You Mind." While we're used to being kept on our toes by the Canadian artist—he's nothing if not unpredictable—the whole ordeal was a bit more surprising for UK artist whose voice appears on the track.

In an interview on BBC Radio 1Xtra this weekend, Kyla explained that she thought the whole thing was going to be an April Fools' joke.

She told the BBC's Trevor Nelson that she got a call and a load of emails from music licensing businesses."To be honest, I was really bad and kept putting them aside like, 'I'll call later.' I got [messages] from all the big companies. They were like, 'you need to get in contact, someone wants to sample your tune.' I was like, 'yeah, I'll get to them.' You know how it goes, sometimes we've had things come in and they fall through at the last minute."

When she finally got around to returning the call, Kyla said the the company told her that a huge international star wanted to sample her tune, and that they wanted to meet. She said: "I was like 'Yeah ok, who?' and when they said Drake, I was like, 'Yeah right!' We signed papers and I still didn't believe it. I had a feeling someone was gonna say to me 'April Fools'."

Kyla also said that the collaboration has given her the motivation to return to making music after taking a few years off to start a family.
