When it comes to finding gold at the ends of rainbows, we haven't had much luck. Considering the fact that they've transformed the Gowanus subway bridge into a massive, shifting rainbow, however, finding out about creative agency Vanderbilt Republic might be the next best thing. Spectrum II is a project that takes an analog approach to projection mapping by coloring the elevated train bridge with heavy-duty stage lamps blasted through a spectrum of gels. A team led by creators Colin Bowring and Vanderbult Republic founder George Del Barrio hand-crank wheels wrapped with the colorful translucent plastic, summoning an ever-shifting rainbow to the expanses of the neighborhood, each hue aligning with bridge's towering pillars. According to the project's description, the "half-mile light sculpture will evolve nightly through two weeks of research, transforming the frame of the Smith-9th Street bridge into a canvas for ecstatic creation."

Spectrum II is the latest in Vanderbilt Republic's Photographic Monuments series, which has seen brick chimneys host intimate photographs, and iconic signs become projected canvases. The visual experiment kicked off on January 12, and will continue each night through January 23, alighting the bridge just as it gets dark. Below, check out Spectrum II in action, and visit Gowanus to see it live for four more nights.
