Police have charged alleged serial killer Bruce McArthur with the murder of Kirushna Kumar Kanagaratnam, whom they named on Monday, about a month after publicly releasing a photo of his face, in hopes of identifying him.Police believe Kanagaratnam is McArthur’s eighth victim. They announced on Friday that they had identified him and were in the process of contacting his family.Kanagaratnam arrived in Canada from Sri Lanka in 2010 and would’ve been 37 years old when he was killed. Police believe he was killed some time between September 3 and December 14, 2015, said Det. Sgt. Hank Idsinga.Kanagaratnam was living in Scarborough, said Idsinga. He would not comment on Kanagaratnam’s immigration status, but said he had never been reported missing and that there was no evidence connecting him to Toronto’s gay village, unlike many of McArthur’s other alleged victims. He had no immediate family in Canada, but did have some distant relatives in the GTA.Police released Kanagaratnam’s photo as a “last resort” in March because they’d exhausted all traditional methods of identifying him, they said at the time. In the picture, the man’s eyes were nearly shut, and police believed the man was dead when the picture was taken. Idsinga refused to say where the photo came from but police sources have told journalists that McArthur kept a cache of photos of his alleged victims on his computer.Police had previously stated that the remains of seven people had been found in planters at a midtown Toronto property where McArthur had been working as a landscaper. They’ve now confirmed that the 7th set of remains were Kanagaratnam’s.McArthur, who was arrested in January, now faces eight counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of missing men, many of whom were connected to Toronto’s gay village.
