Here at Broadly, we like to talk seriously about the stuff that actually matters to women. Which is why we're holding a Broadly Speaking panel in Melbourne next week!

We've curated a panel of unique and important voices and you're invited to join us on Thursday, October 13 at Alpha60 Chapter House.

Moderated by creative director Kashi Somers, the roundtable will feature three women—writer Penny Modra, artist Atong Atem, and Australian Sex Party secretary Nevena Spirovska—discussing the theme "Control: How Can Women Take and Own Their Place." Drinks, snacks, and music by Jennifer Loveless will follow.

ABOUT BROADLY SPEAKING:
Control: How Can Women Take and Own Their Place

Women in control are seen and represented in many forms—from overbearing and uptight to structured, inspiring, and empowered. While aggressive men may be called "go-getters," women equivalents are often labelled as "bossy bitches." We look to highlight the representations of strong women in their fields and look at ways to change the status quo. Panelists will discuss their craft, the obstacles they've faced, and why the future is looking bright.

ABOUT OUR PANELISTS:

Penny Modra is like the unofficial Mayor of Melbourne. After a seven year stint as the editor of online culture guide Three Thousand and editorial director of The Thousands nationally, Penny co-founded The Good Copy, a writing studio, grammar school, and publisher.

Atong Atem is an artist whose family migrated to Australia from Sudan as refugees. Her work explores the identities of first and second-generation African migrants living in Australia, race, colonialism, and gender.

Nevena Spirovska is the secretary of The Australian Sex Party. She campaigns for marriage equality, women's reproductive rights, legalisation of cannabis, and secularisation between the church and state.
