Prom Nite's Haphazard Bubblegum Pop Includes Melody and Mash

Listen to the Toronto band's debut album of poppy and damaged punk.

I first came across Prom Nite through a live performance on the long-running Toronto punk rock radio show Equalizing Distort. It was a fiery and spirited gig that had the four-piece playing in a hallway but the 11 songs ended up being released on their Live in Studio 3 cassette that I've since tracked down. Think of their music as poppy and damaged punk rock that at times verges on a jumbled mess but retains a robust energy. In a 2016 report on the Toronto hardcore and punk scene Jonah Falco described the band as "playing frenetic and quick semi-atonal vocals over fast moving and wide ranging guitar" and their poppy/bubblegum discordance hits a chord for those who like some melody and mash.

After four cassettes the band, who features Scott Jenner of VCR and the great Murder City Video productions, have just released their debut LP Dancing To This Beat.

Some of the songs from the radio performance including "No Motivation" and "Eternity of Man" have been re-recorded for the new album but retain all the puissance that I remember from the radio broadcast.

Album standouts include "Missionary", "Masculine Side and "Condo", a song that will be familiar to anyone who lives in a city that's been over run with mass gentrification.

'Dancing to This Beat' is available online now.
